If there’s one thing I love, it’s a great menswear-inspired shoe. Whether you fall into the Oxford or D
How To Style Derby Shoes
I will say though, more often than not, I hear from a lot of women that they’re a bit confused on how to style a Derby shoe. Is it dressy? Do you keep it casual? What time of pants looks best with a pair of derby shoes? There are a lot of questions! Today, I want to dive deep into how to style D
WHAT IS A DERBY-STYLE SHOE
First off, let’s define it. A Derby shoe is a style of boot or shoe characterized by quarters with shoelace eyelets that are sewn on top of the vamp. This construction method, also known as “open lacing”, contrasts with that of Oxford. (source) An Oxford shoe is characterized by shoelace eyelets tabs that are attached under the vamp, a feature termed “closed lacing”
DERBY SHOE STYLES
Given that the Derby shoe is worn by both men and women, the number of styles, colors, and fabrics you can choose from is pretty endless. Right now though, for ease of conversation, there are two main “types” of Derby shoes out there for women: traditional and platform. The traditional style Derby has a very small heel, if that, and by all accounts is considered the most versatile option.
Right now, however, there is a trend emerging in the Derby world of platforms, which you can see I’m wearing today. It’s an updated date on the classic Derby but with a little extra height. I love them both, but you know these platforms Halogen x Atlantic-Pacific Derby were calling my name. (And yes, they’re now on sale!)
How To Wear Derby Shoes Casually
For today’s look here, you can see I went pretty casual with my Derby shoes. You can really wear them with anything: jeans, dresses, skirts, etc. I think the only thing I would stay away from are wide-leg pants or flare jeans. The shoe really needs to be seen in its entirety to create the illusion of a longer leg. I wore this look to dinner with friends, and even to a museum with Adam. It’s casual and comfortable but the shoe totally pulls the entire look together.
How To Dress Up Derby Shoes
The Derby is a great shoe to choose when you need to be dressed up a bit, but know walking forever in high heels is just not going to happen. For example, these shoes would be perfect if you were attending New York Fashion Week. You’ll be running around the city from show to show, but don’t have to stress about the pain of high heels. I would 100% wear these navy patent platform Derby’s to NYFW. This look from Blair of Atlantic-Pacific is my total inspiration on how to dress them up. I wish I had realized a long time ago that these were the perfect New York shoe…would have saved my poor feet a lot of pain.
Wearing Derby’s During Winter & Fall
For winter and fall, it’s all about staying warm. So when you want to wear your Derby shoes during the cooler seasons, go for the dark wash skinny pant, cozy sweater, coat, or scarf, and add on the perfect Derby shoe. For the cooler months, I’d say go for the suede derbies or leather derby shoes. I love this look for a little Derby look inspiration, don’t you? I’ve created my own version of it here you can shop!
Wearing Derby’s During Spring & Summer
As I mentioned before, given that the shoes I’m wearing today are from her Halogen collection, it’s no surprise Atlantic-Pacific does no wrong when styling Derby shoes. I mentioned her dressed-up look earlier, but she also knows how to do them for the warmer months too. I totally want to recreate this outfit once spring and summer hit (switch out the sweater for a cotton blouse) with my own Derby’s. I’ve created my own version here look here you can shop!
