These 10 Fashion Trends Will Rule Fall/winter 2022-2023

Summer isn’t quite over yet, but we’re already looking ahead to the season of cozy cashmere, plaid skirts, and pumpkin spice everything. Here you’ll find the top ten fall fashion trends for fall 2022 to start shopping (and wearing) right this very second. From supersized tote bags to sheer blouses and even the rise of the horse girl, here’s everything you’ll want to add to your cart for fall.

1.  XL Totes

Remember all those chic work totes you put in storage two and a half years ago? Well, the time has finally come to break them back out. Oversize bags that can fit all the essentials in addition to your laptop, gym shoes, two or three murder mystery novels, a bento box lunch, your makeup bag, and maybe a spare lip balm are replacing ‘90s baguettes as the style du jour. (We’re exaggerating about the size, but you get the picture—the bigger the better.)

2. Utility Pants

Cargo pants and utility styles have been slowly gaining traction for at least a year now, but once the weather starts to cool down we expect they’ll skyrocket to must-have status. The key to making these sporty trousers look posh is to choose unexpected fabrics (like gray wool, silk, or linen) and make sure to keep the detailing to a minimum. One or two pockets on the sides are fine, but avoid styles with three or more, and skip the wallet chains, excess zippers, and color blocking that were popular in the ‘90s.

3. Barbiecore 2.0

Think less Barbie out on the town with her gal pals and more Barbie chilling at home in oversize PJs. Pink wide-leg trousers, silk button-up shirts, floaty midi dresses, and even suiting will replace the mini skirts, corset tops, and sexy bodysuits from summer. The good news is you can still rock any and all hot pink accessories—bags, hair clips, shoes—from one season to the next.

4. ‘90s Minimalism

This trend combines a few must-have pieces to create one super-chic look. White tank tops, slim-fit maxi skirts, ‘90s-era denim, pointy-toe boots, and longline cardigans are all smart investments for fall ’22, but especially if you wear them together à la Rachel Green in her Ralph Lauren years.

5. Leather Jackets

Every fall a different style of the jacket comes to the forefront as the most popular silhouette of the year. Sometimes it’s denim truckers, sometimes it’s plaid blazers, but for 2022 it’s leather jackets. Classic moto jackets seem to be the leaders of the trend, but other cropped leather styles are also in play, so have some fun mixing it up—so long as you stick with timeless black.

6. Sheer Materials

Cut-outs have been having a moment for a while now, but they’re not the most practical option for cold-weather months. Sheer materials have a similar peek-a-boo effect without baring quite so much skin and can also be layered over (or under) other pieces to create cool new textures or patterns. Expect the trend to run the gamut from totally sheer cocktail dresses to more demure see-through sleeves on otherwise modest blouses.

7. Maxi Lengths

The latest iteration of the ‘90s revival, maxi-length skirts are back for fall or winter           2022 -2023. Slim silhouettes, enough to show your curves without constricting your movement, are the way to go rather than billowing boho numbers. Pair them with simple T-shirts or tucked-in button-up shirts and a pointy-toe shoe to keep that ‘90s vibe going.

8. Classically Feminine Detailing

Multiple FW22 runway collections featured an abundance of bows, puff sleeves, empire waistlines, pastel hues, babydoll dresses, lingerie-inspired detailing, and other classically feminine features. We like to consider this a continuation of the Bridgerton craze but prefer to style these pieces with contrasting items like black patent-leather boots, loose skater-inspired jeans, or more masculine sharp tailoring.

9. Boots, Boots, Boots

Usually, there are a handful of shoe trends we’re excited about for fall, like ballet flats or loafers, but for 2022 pretty much all of the biggest footwear trends are boots. Chunky moto boots, thigh-high boots, platform Chelsea boots, embellished stilettos—you name it, it’s likely trending. It’s time to stock up on every style of boot you’d ever had your eye on and give your sporty sneakers a break.

10. Horse Girls

The equestrian aesthetic is always a chic option for fall, but we predict it will be a top trend, not just a cute backup, in 2022. It just makes sense as a natural progression from tennis skirts to country club prep to yet another upper-crust sport. So go forth and shop all the single-breast jackets, knee-high boots, and slim-fit trousers your heart desires.
